Thor, the strongest of the gods of the North, travels to the land of the giants with clever, untrustworthy Loki. They meet a giant so big they sleep in his glove, a cat that is not a cat, and a serpent that circles the world. Later Loki's tricks bring trouble on all the gods.

Read the opening

Long ago, Thor and Loki set out from Asgard, the city of the gods, on a journey to Jotunheim, the land of the giants. Thor was the god of thunder and the strongest of all the gods. He always carried his hammer, Mjolnir, which came back to his hand every time he threw it. Loki was clever and quick, but nobody could ever be sure what he was thinking.

They travelled in Thor's iron chariot, which was pulled by two white goats. The wheels made a loud rumbling noise as they rolled along. The ladies of Asgard did not like the sound, but Thor thought it was sweeter than any music.

In the evening they came to a small, poor farmhouse. The farmer and his wife were kind, but they had no food to give their visitors. So Thor did something strange. He killed his own two goats, cooked them, and invited the whole family to supper.
